Case IH 3179 (F-518645-09) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message BC2EDC2
Issue description
Engine is not receiving a message from the machine controller - BC2EDC2 message. This indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the engine control unit is expecting a regular data broadcast from the machine's main vehicle controller, but the message is not arriving within the required time limit.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Magnum Series: 235, 250, 260, 280, 290, 310, 315, 340, 380 (Series 4 / Tier 4 Final)
- Case IH Puma Series: 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX
- Case IH Farmall Series: 40, 45, 50 (Tractors with Cab and CVT Transmission), 105U, 110A, 115A, 115C, 115U
Check the cause
Verify that the battery voltage is sufficient (typically > 10.01V). Low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN network.
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Machine Controller for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or signs of rodent damage.
Disconnect the harnesses at both the Engine ECU and the Machine Controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture intrusion.
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms.
Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (such as 3180 VCM2EDC, 3182 RxCCVS, or 3183 TSC1-VR). Multiple timeout codes may point to a wiring short or a completely failed controller.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Clean and reseat connectors
If corrosion or loose connections were found during diagnostics, clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease and securely reconnect the harnesses to the ECM and Machine Controller.
Repair wiring
If a short or open circuit was found in the CAN harness, repair the damaged section of wire using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Replace faulty module
If the wiring, power, and grounds are all verified as good, but the BC2EDC2 message is still missing, the fault lies internally within either the Machine Controller (failing to send) or the Engine ECU (failing to receive). Replace the faulty module.
Reprogram new modules
If a new Engine ECU or Machine Controller is installed, it will require dealer programming using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (E.S.T.) to flash the correct firmware and machine datasets.
Clear codes and test
Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes, and run the machine to verify the CAN communication is restored and the code does not return.
