Case IH 3179 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Timeout of CAN Message BC2EDC2

Issue description

CAN bus communication failure. The Engine Control Module (EDC) expects to receive a specific data packet (BC2EDC2) from the Vehicle Controller (VCM / Cab Controller) at regular intervals. When this message is not received within the programmed time limit, the system logs a timeout error.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Vehicle Controller and the Engine Controller for physical damage, chafing, cuts, or corrosion.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plugs at both the Engine Controller and the Vehicle Controller. Check for bent pins, pushed-back terminals, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins. A healthy CAN bus should measure approximately 60 ohms. If it reads ~120 ohms, one of the CAN terminators has failed or there is an open circuit/break in the wiring. If it reads 0 ohms, the CAN High and CAN Low wires are shorted together.

  4. Power and Ground Verification: Verify that both the Engine Controller and Vehicle Controller are receiving proper unswitched power, switched power, and clean grounds.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the battery before servicing CAN bus components or unplugging control modules.

  2. Clean and Secure Connections

    If moisture or light corrosion is found at the ECU/VCM connectors, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.

  3. Test Wiring Continuity

    If the visual inspection is clear, use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low wires for end-to-end continuity between the controllers. Repair any broken wires found in the harness.

  4. Replace Faulty Terminators

    If the CAN bus resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate the CAN bus terminator resistors (often located near the engine bay and behind the cab/armrest). Replace the faulty terminator. Note: Case IH issued a service bulletin to replace older, failure-prone active terminators with a newer, more stable passive "cap style" resistor.

  5. Module Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the wiring harness is perfectly intact, terminators measure correctly, and power/ground is verified, the fault is likely an internal failure of the CAN transceiver within either the Vehicle Controller or the Engine Controller. This requires replacing the module and having a dealer reprogram it.

  6. Clear and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and test-run the machine to verify the code does not return.
