Issue description
Engine is not receiving a message from the machine controller - VM2EDC message. This indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the Engine Control Module (ECM/EDC) has stopped receiving the expected data packets from the main Vehicle Control Module (VCM) within the required time limit.

Check the cause
Verify that the machine's battery voltage is within specification and that both the VCM and Engine ECU are receiving proper power and ground.
Look for other CAN timeout codes (such as 3182 RxCCVS timeout, 3183/3184 TSC1-VR timeouts, or 3652 Primary Vehicle CAN Bus Failure) to see if the entire CAN Node A bus is compromised.
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (should read approximately 60 ohms).
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Controller to the Engine ECU for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connector pins, especially near the engine block or cab pivot points.

Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.
Inspect Connectors
Disconnect the main harness connectors at both the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the Engine ECU. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and check for pushed-back or bent pins.
Perform Continuity Testing
Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the VCM and the Engine ECU. Resistance should be less than 1 ohm.
Test for Shorts
Test the CAN wires for continuity to ground and continuity to power. If a short is found, trace the harness to locate the damaged section.
Repair Wiring
If a break or short is found in the twisted-pair CAN wiring, repair the wires using OEM-approved splicing techniques (maintaining the twist in the wires as much as possible to prevent electromagnetic interference) or replace the affected harness section.
Software/Module Verification
Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code immediately returns, the issue may require a software reflash of the VCM/ECU by a dealer, or one of the controllers has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
