Case IH 3180 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication error between vehicle controller to ECU
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Central Control Unit (CCU) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The ECU relies on this twisted-pair network to receive operational commands; when the signal times out or is interrupted, this code is triggered.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- Steiger T4B
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- 7240
- 8240
- 9240
- Magnum Series
- 235–340 Series 4
- Puma Series
- Steiger/Quadtrac Series
- Farmall Series
- Case SSL (Skid Steer Loaders)
- CTL (Compact Track Loaders)
Check the cause
Verify that the tractor/machine battery has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger)
Check for a faulty alternator or charging system causing voltage spikes or drops
Check the CAN controller and its voltage supply
Look for a short circuit or open circuit in the wiring between the VCM and the ECU
Rule out a faulty solenoid or a failing Central Control Unit (CCU) / Universal Control Module (UCM)
Repair steps
Disconnect External Power
If any external power source is connected to the machine, remove it and cycle the key to see if the code clears.
Visual Inspection
Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors between the Vehicle Controller and the Engine ECU. Look for damaged, bent, or displaced pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.
Harness Flex Test
Flex the involved harnesses while observing the diagnostic monitor to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts in the wiring.
Repair Wiring
If harness damage or a short circuit is found, repair the damaged wiring or replace the affected harness section. Ensure connectors are completely seated and locked.
Software Verification
If the wiring is intact and the fault has not been resolved, verify that the appropriate software is present on the ECU (A-095) and the Universal Control Module (UCM). Reinstall or flash the software if necessary.
Module Replacement
If all wiring, voltage, and software checks pass, the fault lies internally within the CAN transceiver of either the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or the Vehicle Control Module (VCM/UCM). Replace the faulty module.
