Case IH 3180 – Engine Controller (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control / Engine ECU): CAN Message Not Received From Vehicle Controller - VM2EDC

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM/EDC) has lost communication with the Vehicle Master Controller (VCM) over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The engine controller is expecting a continuous stream of operational data from the vehicle controller, and the timeout threshold has been exceeded without a message being received.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the vehicle batteries are fully charged and that the alternator is outputting correct voltage, as low voltage can cause CAN modules to drop offline.

  2. Look for other accompanying CAN bus codes (e.g., 3182 RxCCVS timeout, 3185 TF timeout) to determine if the entire CAN bus network is down.

  3. Visually inspect the main wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Controller to the Engine Controller for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.

  4. Disconnect the harnesses at both the VCM and the EDC and measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  5. Ensure the Vehicle Controller is receiving proper switched power, unswitched power, and clean grounds.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during harness manipulation.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Locate the connectors at the Engine Controller and the Vehicle Controller. Disconnect them and inspect for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture (green crust). Clean with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat them.

  3. Repair Harness

    If the continuity test reveals an open or shorted CAN wire, trace the harness to the point of damage. Splice and solder the broken CAN wires, sealing them with dual-wall heat shrink tubing to prevent moisture intrusion.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance is 120 ohms (instead of 60), one terminating resistor is faulty or disconnected. Locate and replace the faulty CAN terminating resistor.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness, power, grounds, and terminating resistors all test perfectly, the CAN transceiver inside either the Vehicle Controller or the Engine Controller has likely failed. The faulty module must be replaced and flashed/calibrated by a dealer using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3180 fault code. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
