3183 (F-518666-09) - ECU

Case IH 3183 (F-518666-09) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_VR message (Engine brake)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has timed out or received corrupted/invalid data from the main machine/vehicle controller regarding the TSC1_VR (Engine Brake) command over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Axial-Flow Combines 240 Series (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • Magnum Tractors MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, and Series 4 (235-340)
  • Steiger Tractors
  • Puma Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Check for external power interference (e.g., verify the battery power supply has not been connected to a jump box or external charger).

  2. Check for accompanying CAN-related error codes (such as P0600 Serial Communication Link or CAN Bus Off failures) indicating a broader network failure.

  3. Inspect the integrity of the CAN Node A Bus, which is the main vehicle interface bus.

  4. Verify the ECU A-095 is running the most up-to-date software version.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect external power

If an external power supply is connected to the machine, disconnect it immediately and cycle the key to test the system for normal operation.

  2. Inspect wiring harness

Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors between the vehicle controller and the Engine ECU (A-095). Look for damaged, bent, or pushed-back pins, corroded terminals, or chafed wires.

  3. Perform flex test

While the machine is keyed on, gently flex the involved wiring harnesses to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts in the twisted-pair wiring. Monitor the diagnostic screen to see if the code status changes from active to inactive.

  4. Check termination resistors

With batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a termination resistor or the ECU's internal resistor circuit has failed, or there is an open circuit.

  5. Re-flash the ECU

If the wiring and resistance checks pass, re-flash the ECU A-095 with the appropriate and latest software using the electronic service tool.

  6. Replace Engine Control Unit

If the software update fails to resolve the communication error, the ECU A-095 powerstage or internal SPI bus may have suffered an internal failure, requiring replacement of the Engine Control Unit.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM)

Dependent on specific engine/machine serial number; referenced internally as ECU A-095. Must be programmed/flashed with the correct software payload upon installation.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connectors

    Twisted-pair CAN communication harness.

  • CAN Termination Resistor

120-ohm CAN resistor (if the external resistor on the bus is found to be faulty).
