Case IH 3184 (F-518667-09) - ECU – ECU A-095: CAN communication failure between the vehicle controller and the ECU controller (TSC1_VR message)
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is either not receiving the expected engine brake command message from the vehicle/machine controller over the CAN bus, or the message data is corrupted/invalid.

Check the cause
Check for other active CAN faults: If other vehicle CAN faults exist (e.g., CAN Bus off failure, BC2ECU2 message failures), resolve those first, as a broader CAN bus failure will trigger this specific message loss.
Check for external power supplies: Verify that the machine's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or external charger). If connected, disconnect it and test the system for normal operation.
Check ECU A-095 supply voltage: Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, disconnect the vehicle (VE) harness from the ECU A-095 at connector X-911, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and use a multimeter to check for proper battery voltage on the vehicle harness side of the connector.
Check for shorts to ground: With the ignition OFF and connector X-911 disconnected, use a multimeter to perform a continuity check from X-911 pin 19 (wire 1930 WH) to chassis ground, and to all other pins. There should be no continuity.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the harnesses and connectors (especially X-911) for damaged, bent, or pushed-back pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires. Flex the harnesses while observing the monitor to check for intermittent breaks or shorts.
Repair steps
Clear External Interference
Disconnect any external power supplies or aftermarket CAN devices that might be corrupting the bus traffic.
Repair Wiring/Connectors
If the continuity tests reveal a short to ground or an open circuit in the CAN lines or power supply lines, repair or replace the affected section of the vehicle harness.
Clean and Reseat
If no wiring damage is found, thoroughly clean the pins on connector X-911 and the ECU header with contact cleaner. Reconnect and ensure the connector is fully seated and locked.
Software Flash
If the wiring is intact and the fault persists, the ECU A-095 software may be corrupted. Have a dealer technician verify the appropriate software version is present and reinstall/flash the ECU software using the Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Replace the ECU
If all wiring, voltage, and software checks pass but the ECU still cannot process the TSC1_VR CAN message, the ECU A-095 has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
