Case IH 3185 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) A-095: CAN timeout error from the transmission regarding the Transmission Fluids (TF) message
Issue description
The control module senses a message timeout for proprietary Transmission Fluids (TF) information over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
- Case IH Magnum Series 4 (235 - 340)
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
Check the cause
Check for active CAN faults: Verify if there are any other related vehicle CAN faults active. If other CAN faults exist, they must be resolved first.
Check ECU Supply Voltage: If no other CAN faults exist, check the supply voltage to the ECU A-095.
Connector X-911 Test: Disconnect the vehicle (VE) harness from the ECU A-095 at connector X-911. With the ignition switch in the ON position, use a multimeter to check for proper voltage and ground on the vehicle harness side.
Wiring & Resistor Inspection: Test the CAN circuit wiring for open circuits, shorts to ground, or short circuits. Verify that the CAN termination resistors are present and functioning correctly.
Repair steps
Resolve Network Issues
Address any other active CAN bus error codes first, as fixing the network communication often resolves the 3185 timeout error.
Inspect Wiring Harness
Visually and physically inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the ECU A-095. Look for chafed wires, corroded pins at connector X-911, or loose grounds. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
Verify Power/Ground
Ensure the ECU A-095 is receiving proper supply voltage and has a solid ground connection.
Test/Replace Modules
If the wiring, voltage, ground, and termination resistors all test within specification, the communication failure is internal to a module. The fault lies with either the ECU A-095, the Central Control Unit (CCU), or the Universal Control Module (UCM) failing to broadcast or receive the TF message. Replace the faulty module and re-flash/calibrate the software as required by the OEM service manual.
