Case IH 3186 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder1 Warning - Fast Decay Error

Issue description

The Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM/EDC) has detected an electrical or mechanical anomaly with the fuel injector solenoid valve on Cylinder 1. A fast decay error means the injector valve is staying open longer than intended, or the electrical signature indicates a delay in the magnetic field collapsing.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness from the ECM to the Cylinder 1 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or loose pins (a short or high resistance can mimic a solenoid decay error)

  2. Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector and measure the resistance across the injector pins with a multimeter, comparing the reading to OEM specifications

  3. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform a cylinder cutout test to verify if Cylinder 1 is contributing to engine performance

  4. Check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors to see if Cylinder 1 is mechanically sticking open and bypassing excessive fuel to the return line

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Clean the area around the Cylinder 1 injector thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the engine or fuel system.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has fully depressurized.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 injector.

  4. Remove Lines

    Remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the Cylinder 1 injector. (Note: OEM guidelines mandate that high-pressure common rail lines be discarded and replaced with new ones once loosened).

  5. Remove Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  6. Clean Bore

    Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper sealing washers or carbon debris are left behind.

  7. Install New Injector

    Install the new injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.

  8. Reassembly

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to exact OEM specifications. Install the new high-pressure fuel line and torque the fittings. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Programming

    Turn the key on and connect the Case IH EST diagnostic tool. You must enter the new injector's IQA/Trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECM so it can properly calibrate the fueling for that specific injector.

  10. Test

    Clear the fault codes, prime the fuel system, start the engine, and check for leaks and proper operation.
