Case IH 3187 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Cylinder1 Warning - Application Dependent

This code indicates an anomaly in the operation or electrical circuit of the fuel injector for Cylinder 1. The fault typically points to a wiring harness issue, a failing injector solenoid, or an issue with the injector driver inside the control module.

   Check for accompanying codes (3186, 3188, 3189) using a diagnostic tool to narrow down whether the issue is an open circuit, short circuit, or current level error.

   Inspect the fuel injector wiring harness connecting the ECM to the Cylinder 1 injector for chafing, heat damage, or rodent damage.

   Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector connector and the ECM harness connector to check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

   Perform a resistance (ohm) test on the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid to ensure it is within OEM specifications, and test the harness for continuity and shorts to ground.

   If the electrical circuit tests fine, use a diagnostic tool to perform a cylinder cutout test to verify if the injector is mechanically responding.

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the machine's battery before working on the engine's electrical or fuel injection systems.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the Cylinder 1 injector to prevent dirt or debris from entering the engine or fuel system.

   Repair/Replace the Harness

   If the diagnostic tests revealed high resistance or a break in the wiring, replace the injector wiring harness. Ensure the new harness is routed correctly and weather-sealed connections are fully seated.

   Replace the Injector

   If the wiring is intact but the injector solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp, then extract the Cylinder 1 injector. Install the new injector with new seals/O-rings.

   Program the Injector

   If the injector was replaced, you must use the CNH EST diagnostic tool to program the new injector's IMA (Injector Adjustment) code into the ECM. Failure to do so will result in poor running conditions and further fault codes.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM, and run the engine to verify the repair.
