Case IH 3188 – Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095): Open load error of injector in cylinder 1

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detected the electrical pattern for an 'open load' (an incomplete electrical circuit or break in the connection) during the evaluation of the cylinder 1 injector (designated as component Y-061).

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 150

  • 240 Series Combine 6160
  • 240 Series Combine 7160
  • Patriot Sprayer
  • WD-series windrower

Check the cause

  1. Check for concurrent codes to see if any other error codes are displayed.

  2. Check power supply: Ensure that the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (such as a jump box or external charger), as voltage irregularities can trigger false open load patterns in the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect the Wiring Harness

Trace the wiring harness from ECU A-095 to the cylinder 1 injector (Y-061). Look for chafed wires, disconnected plugs, or broken pins that would cause an open circuit.

  2. Test the Injector Connection

Disconnect the electrical connector at the cylinder 1 injector. Check for corrosion or pushed-out pins.

  3. Ohm Test the Injector

Measure the resistance across the terminals of the cylinder 1 injector. If the injector reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or is out of OEM specification, the injector solenoid has failed internally.

  4. Replace the Injector

If the injector fails the resistance test, replace the cylinder 1 fuel injector and install new O-rings and copper tip washers.

  5. ECU Power Stage Check

If the wiring is completely intact and the injector tests good, the hardware error may reside within the ECU A-095 power stages, requiring ECU replacement or reprogramming.
