Case IH 3189 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder1 Warning - Current Level Error

The engine control module has detected an electrical anomaly in the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 1. The current flowing to the injector solenoid is either too high, too low, or there is a short circuit (to ground or battery) or an open circuit in the wiring or the injector coil itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 1 injector for signs of chafing, melting, or physical damage

   Disconnect the harness at the ECU and the injector and check the pins and terminals for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins

   Use a multimeter to check the wiring for short circuits (low side to battery, high side to ground) or an open circuit

   Measure the resistance of the Cylinder 1 injector coil to determine if the injector has failed internally (defective coil)

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the Cylinder 1 fuel injector and the Engine ECU.

   Harness Repair

   If the wiring harness failed the continuity or short-circuit tests, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the engine injector wiring harness entirely.

   Injector Replacement

   If the wiring is intact but the injector coil resistance is out of specification, remove the faulty Cylinder 1 fuel injector and install a new replacement injector. (Note: It is highly recommended to use clean oil and avoid mixing genuine and aftermarket injectors on the same engine).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the wiring harness to the injector and the ECU, ensuring connectors are fully seated and locked.

   Restore Power & Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU memory.

   Test Run

   Start the engine and verify that it runs smoothly without logging the 3189 fault code again.
