Case IH 319 – ENGINE (ECM) CONTROLLER: Real Time Clock in controller has lost power
Issue description
The real-time clock (a timing chip internal to the controller) is powered by the vehicle's unswitched battery supply. If battery power to the controller is lost for more than 5 seconds, the real-time clock loses its time and date accuracy. There is no effect on engine or machine performance, but logged data will not have accurate time and date stamps, and the amber maintenance/check engine lamp may illuminate.

Check the cause
Verify if the vehicle's main batteries were recently disconnected, replaced, or if the master disconnect switch was left off for more than 5 seconds
Inspect the unswitched battery supply circuit to the ECM for intact wiring and proper voltage
Check the harness backup battery voltage (if equipped) — the fault sets if voltage drops to 3.3 VDC or lower
Inspect the ECM and engine harness connector pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture that could interrupt power
Repair steps
Restore Power
Ensure the main vehicle batteries are fully charged and properly connected to the ECM.
Repair Wiring/Harness Battery
If the harness backup battery is dead, or if the wiring/connectors between the battery and the ECM are damaged, repair the wiring or replace the harness battery.
Synchronize the Clock
Connect a diagnostic PC using the OEM diagnostic software (such as Cummins INSITE or Case IH EST). Navigate to the 'Real Time Clock' feature and perform an automatic synchronization to match the ECM Real Time to the PC Date and Time.
Clear the Code
Perform a key cycle (turn the keyswitch OFF, wait for the ECM to power down, then turn it back ON) to validate the repair and clear the active fault code.
Note on ECM Replacement
The real-time clock is an internal chip and cannot be serviced separately. Because this fault does not affect engine performance, replacing the entire ECM is generally not recommended unless accurate time-stamping is strictly required for warranty or fleet tracking purposes.
