3197

Case IH 3197 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Cylinder3 Warning - Current Level Error

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical circuit malfunction related to the fuel injector on Cylinder 3. The module detects an abnormal current level—such as a temporary current peak, high resistance, or a short circuit—at the Cylinder 3 injector solenoid valve, resulting in a severe engine derate (limp mode).

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the injector wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 3 injector for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas shorting to the engine block.

  2. Disconnect the Cylinder 3 injector and the ECM connectors to check for oil intrusion, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins of the Cylinder 3 injector solenoid and compare the reading to a known good injector (e.g., Cylinder 2 or 4).

  4. Swap the Cylinder 3 injector with the Cylinder 2 injector, clear the codes, and run the engine. If the code changes to 3193, the injector is faulty. If it remains 3197, the issue is in the wiring harness or ECM driver.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Gain Access

Remove the engine covers or valve cover (depending on the specific FPT engine model's injector placement) to access the Cylinder 3 fuel injector.

  3. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the damaged section of the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors, or replace the injector harness entirely.

  4. Injector Replacement (If Applicable)

Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the Cylinder 3 injector. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the injector. Cap the rail and line to prevent contamination. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head bore. Clean the injector bore thoroughly, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed. Install the new injector with a new copper washer and new O-rings. Torque the hold-down clamp and the high-pressure fuel line to the exact specifications outlined in your specific engine's service manual.

  5. Reassembly and Programming

Reinstall the valve cover/engine covers. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear and Test

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Enter the new injector's trim code/IQA code into the ECM (if required for your specific Tier 3/Tier 4a engine). Clear the inactive 3197 fault code and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
