Case IH 3201 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC / EEM: Cylinder4 Warning - Current Level Error
Issue description
The engine control module has detected an abnormal electrical current draw (current level error) at the fuel injector solenoid valve on cylinder 4. This is typically caused by a temporary current peak, a short circuit, or an open circuit within the injector's internal coil or the engine wiring harness. When this fault is active, the engine will likely enter a derated state (reduced power and RPM) to protect the system, and the ECU may shut off the injector bank containing cylinder 4.

Check the cause
Inspect the engine wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the cylinder 4 fuel injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or shorts to ground
Disconnect the cylinder 4 injector connector and check for corrosion, loose pins, or fluid intrusion (oil/diesel)
Measure the resistance of the cylinder 4 injector solenoid coil using a multimeter and compare it to OEM specifications (a dead short or infinite resistance indicates a failed injector coil)
Swap the cylinder 4 fuel injector with another cylinder (e.g., cylinder 3), clear the codes, and run the engine to see if the fault code follows the injector or remains on cylinder 4
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ECU damage.
Remove covers
Remove the engine valve cover or access panels as necessary to reach the fuel injectors.
Disconnect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 4 fuel injector.
Clean area
Clean the area around the injector and fuel lines to prevent debris from entering the open fuel system.
Remove fuel line
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel supply line connected to the cylinder 4 injector and the common rail. (Note: High-pressure fuel lines are often single-use and should be replaced once removed to prevent leaks).
Remove clamp
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt.
Extract injector
Carefully extract the fuel injector from the cylinder head.
Clean bore
Clean the injector bore thoroughly, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed from the bottom of the bore.
Install new injector
Install the new fuel injector equipped with a new copper sealing washer and O-ring.
Reinstall clamp
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications.
Install new fuel line
Install the new high-pressure fuel line and torque the fittings to spec.
Reconnect connector
Reconnect the injector electrical connector.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Bleed fuel system
Bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual.
Clear codes and program
Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST) to clear the fault codes. If the new injector requires an IQA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) code, program the new code into the Engine ECU.
Test engine
Run the engine and check for fuel leaks and verify the fault code does not return.
