Case IH 3203 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Cylinder5 Warning - Application Dependent

This code indicates an electrical anomaly or communication issue specifically on the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 5. The Engine Control Module has detected an irregular condition (such as a short circuit, open load, or current level error) that violates the specific operating parameters of the engine's software.

   Inspect the engine wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the cylinder 5 injector for chafing, melted wires, or pinch points.

   Disconnect the injector harness plug (shared 4-pin connector for cylinders 5 and 6, located near the valve cover) and check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed/bent pins.

   Measure the resistance across the cylinder 5 injector solenoid terminals and compare the reading to a known good injector (e.g., cylinder 4 or 6) to determine if the solenoid has failed internally.

   Check for continuity between the injector connector and the ECU pins to verify there is no short to ground or short to battery voltage on the high-side or low-side circuits.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Clean the area around the valve cover to prevent debris from entering the engine.

   Access the Injectors

   Remove the engine valve cover (on many FPT/Cummins engines, the injectors and harness are located under the cover).

   Disconnect Electricals

   Disconnect the internal injector wiring harness from the cylinder 5 injector solenoid.

   Remove Fuel Lines

   Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel inlet tube/line connecting the fuel rail to the cylinder 5 injector.

   Extract the Injector

   Remove the injector hold-down clamp bolt. Carefully pry or pull the injector out of the cylinder head bore.

   Clean the Bore

   Thoroughly clean the injector bore. Crucial: Ensure the old copper sealing washer is removed from the bottom of the bore and not stuck inside.

   Install New Injector

   Fit the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings. Seat it into the bore.

   Reassembly

   Install the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to OEM specifications. Reinstall the high-pressure fuel inlet tube. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Finalize

   Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket. Reconnect the battery.

    System Bleed & Clear Codes

    Bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual. Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the 3203 fault code. Run the engine and check for leaks.
