Case IH 3206 – Engine ECU: Cylinder6 Warning - Fast Decay Error
Issue description
The engine's monitoring system has detected a fast decay error at the injector solenoid valve on Cylinder 6, indicating that the injector valve is staying open longer than intended. This triggers a warning, heavily reduces engine power and speed (limp mode), and the ECU may switch off the affected injector bank.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
Check the cause
Inspect the injection cable and harness for Cylinder 6 to ensure there are no short circuits (low side to ground) or open loads.
Check for fuel inlet or return line restrictions and check for air ingress into the fuel supply.
Verify the fuel delivery performance of the gear supply (lift) pump.
Check the fuel supply pressure to the high-pressure pump and the pressure control of the inlet regulator.
Perform a leakage test to check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors to isolate the cause of excessive fuel leakage.
Repair steps
Verify the Code
Connect the diagnostic service tool to verify that code 3206 is active and check for any accompanying electrical codes (e.g., open load or short circuit on Bank 1).
Inspect Electrical Connections
Disconnect the wiring harness at the Cylinder 6 injector. Clean the contacts and check for resistance/continuity back to the Engine ECU to rule out a wiring harness failure.
Replace the Injector
If the wiring is intact and the fuel supply pressure is within specification, the fast decay error indicates the injector solenoid itself is mechanically failing. Remove the high-pressure fuel line and the hold-down clamp for Cylinder 6, and extract the faulty injector.
Install New Injector
Install the replacement injector with new O-rings and copper sealing washers. Torque the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel lines to OEM specifications.
Clear Codes and Test
Use the diagnostic tool to clear the 3206 fault code from the Engine ECU. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that full engine power and speed are restored (limp mode is deactivated).
