Case IH 3207 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder6 Warning - Application Dependent

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical or performance anomaly in the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 6. This generally points to an irregular current draw, abnormal resistance, or an unexpected response time from the Cylinder 6 injector solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Combines (e.g., 1660, 1680)
  • Case IH Cotton Pickers

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Accompanying Codes: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for related Cylinder 6 codes that might narrow down the issue (e.g., 3208: Cylinder6 Warning - Open Load or 3209: Cylinder6 Warning - Current Level Error).

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the injection cable harness running from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 6 injector. Look for chafing, bare wires, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the Cylinder 6 injector connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.

  4. Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the Cylinder 6 injector solenoid pins. Compare the reading to the OEM specifications for your specific engine tier to determine if the solenoid has failed internally.

  5. Cylinder Contribution Test: Run an injector cutout test via the EST to verify if Cylinder 6 is mechanically contributing to the engine's performance.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged harness, repair the broken wires or replace the injection cable section. If the connector is corroded, clean it with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Access the Injector

If the injector failed the resistance or cutout test, prepare for replacement. Depending on the engine model, this may require removing the valve cover to access the fuel rail and injectors.

  4. Relieve Pressure

Ensure the high-pressure fuel system is depressurized.

  5. Remove the Injector

Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector from the Cylinder 6 injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  6. Install the New Injector

Seat the new injector using new O-rings and a new copper sealing washer.

  7. Torque to Spec

Reinstall the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel lines, torquing them strictly to the OEM service manual specifications for your specific engine.

  8. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall the valve cover (if removed), and reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear Codes

Connect the CNH EST, clear fault code 3207, and run the engine to verify that the code does not return and the engine runs smoothly.
