Case IH 3209 – Engine Control Unit (ENG) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder6 Warning - Current Level Error
Issue description
The engine's control module has detected that the electrical current drawing through the fuel injector solenoid on Cylinder #6 is outside of the expected parameters. This typically points to a failing injector solenoid, high resistance in the wiring, a short circuit, or a damaged electrical connector.

Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the EDC to the Cylinder 6 injector. Look for chafed wires, pinched sections, or signs of a short-circuit on the injection cable.
Connector Check: Disconnect the Cylinder 6 injector connector. Check the connector head to ensure it is not distorted, melted, or suffering from pin corrosion.
Resistance Testing: Measure the resistance (ohms) of the Cylinder 6 injector solenoid and compare it against a known good injector (such as Cylinder 5) to see if the solenoid has failed internally.
Leak-Off Test: If the electrical circuit tests fine, utilize an NEF Engine Fuel Leak Diagnosis Kit to check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors to isolate mechanical failures.
Repair steps
Prep and Clean
Disconnect the machine's battery. Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel rail and the Cylinder 6 injector to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the open fuel system.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 6 fuel injector.
Remove Fuel Lines
Loosen and disconnect the high-pressure fuel injection line (cross tube) connecting the fuel rail to the Cylinder 6 injector. Immediately tape or cap the fuel rail outlet and injector inlet to prevent contamination.
Extract Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt and carefully pull the fuel injector out of the cylinder head bore.
Clean the Bore
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and no debris falls into the cylinder.
Install New Injector
Insert the new fuel injector using a new copper sealing washer and O-rings.
Torque Components
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque the cross tube nut (standard NEF spec is 50 Nm / 37 lb-ft). If replacing the pass-through connector head, torque it to 45 - 55 Nm (33 - 41 lb-ft).
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector. Reconnect the battery, bleed the air from the fuel system, start the engine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3209 fault code.
