Case IH 3211 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Bank 1 - injection cable short circuit low side to ground

The engine control system has detected a short circuit to ground on the low-voltage (ground/control) side of the wiring circuit for the fuel injectors grouped in Bank 1. This can be caused by a chafed wiring harness touching the engine block, an internally shorted fuel injector, or an internal failure within the control module itself.

   Visually inspect the Bank 1 injector wiring harness (injection cable) for chafing, melted insulation, or bare wires touching the engine block or chassis.

   Perform a wiring continuity test by disconnecting the Bank 1 injectors and ECU connector, then checking for continuity to ground on the low-side pins.

   Test individual fuel injectors in Bank 1 for internal short circuits to their outer casing.

   Inspect Engine ECU pins for corrosion, bent pins, or damage that could cause an internal or connector-level short.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorting during the repair.

   Isolate the Short

   Based on the diagnostic tests, determine if the short is in the wiring harness, the injector, or the ECU.

   Repair/Replace Wiring

   If the harness is damaged, repair the chafed section using proper automotive-grade heat-shrink tubing and wire, or replace the entire injector wiring harness.

   Replace Injector

   If an injector tests as internally shorted to ground, remove and replace the faulty fuel injector.

   ECU Replacement (Worst Case)

   If the wiring and injectors test perfectly fine, the Engine ECU has likely failed internally and must be replaced and reprogrammed.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the inactive 3211 fault code, and run the engine to verify the repair.
