3213 (F-2797-04) - ECU

Case IH 3213 (F-2797-04) - ECU – Engine Control Module (Engine ECU): Short Circuit to Ground Monitoring Test in Bank 1

Issue description

The system has detected a short circuit to ground on the low side or high side of the fuel injection cable/wiring harness for Bank 1 (which typically controls the first half of the engine's cylinders, e.g., cylinders 1-3).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (235 – 340, Series 4)
  • Case IH STX Steiger / Quadtrac Tractors (350 – 600 HP)
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Case IH Farmall Tractors (40, 45, 50 with Cab/CVT)
  • Case 580 Super N Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the fuel injector wiring harness for Bank 1. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against the engine block and grounding out.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the injection signals. Test the Bank 1 injector harness for a short circuit of the high-side to the battery or ground, and the low-side to ground.

  3. Test the individual fuel injectors on Bank 1 for internal short circuits.

  4. If the wiring harness and injectors test within normal parameters, verify the Engine ECU for an internal hardware failure.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off ignition

Turn the ignition keyswitch to the OFF position before disconnecting any modules.

  2. Disconnect modules

Disconnect the Engine ECU and the Bank 1 injector wiring harness connectors.

  3. Test harness for short

Using a multimeter, probe the Bank 1 harness pins to check for continuity to ground.

  4. Repair or replace harness

If a short to ground is found in the harness, repair the damaged wire or replace the entire injector wiring harness.

  5. Test fuel injectors

If the harness is intact, test the resistance across the terminals of each Bank 1 fuel injector. Replace any injector that shows an internal short.

  6. Replace Engine ECU

If both the wiring harness and the injectors are functioning correctly, the Engine ECU has suffered an internal defect causing the unclassifiable Bank 1 error. The Engine ECU must be replaced or sent out for remanufacturing.

  7. Clear codes and verify

After repairs, use a diagnostic scan tool (or the onboard diagnostic shorting plug/switch) to clear the inactive DTCs and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
