3215

Case IH 3215 – Engine ECU (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control module): Bank1 Warning - Application Dependent

Issue description

This code indicates a fault detected in the fuel injection system specifically on Bank 1 (which typically covers the front half of the engine cylinders). It fundamentally points to an electrical issue such as a short circuit, open load, or resistance issue in the fuel injector wiring harness or the injector solenoids on Bank 1.

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Related Codes: Check if the EDC has logged accompanying Bank 1 codes such as 3210 (General Short-circuit on Injection Cable), 3211 (Injection Cable Short-circuit Low Side to Ground), or 3216 (Bank1 Warning - Open Load).

  2. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the fuel injector wiring harness for Bank 1. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or loose connections at the ECU and the injector terminals.

  3. Electrical Testing: Disconnect the harness and use a multimeter to check for continuity, shorts to ground, and open circuits between the EDC and the Bank 1 injectors.

  4. Injector Solenoid Resistance: Measure the resistance across the terminals of each fuel injector on Bank 1 to ensure they fall within FPT/Bosch factory specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or damage to the EDC.

  2. Access the Injectors

Remove the valve cover or necessary engine cowling to access the fuel injectors and the internal/external injector wiring harness.

  3. Test and Isolate

Based on the diagnostic checks, isolate whether the fault lies in the wiring harness or a specific injector.

  4. Replace Faulty Component

If the harness is shorted/open: Replace the engine wiring harness or the specific injector harness section. If an injector fails the resistance test: Replace the faulty fuel injector. (Note: OEM guidelines often recommend replacing the entire set of injectors to ensure optimal performance and avoid mixing genuine and aftermarket atomization rates).

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring all connectors click into place securely. Reinstall the valve cover and cowling.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a CAN-BUS diagnostic tool to clear the 3215 fault code from the EDC memory.

  7. Test Run

Start the engine and monitor the diagnostic tool to ensure the code does not return under load.
