Case IH 3216 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Bank1 Warning - Open Load
Issue description
The engine control module has detected an open circuit (loss of electrical continuity) in the fuel injector circuit for Bank 1. This means the ECU is sending a signal to fire the injector(s), but the electrical loop is broken, preventing the injector from operating.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading from the EDC to the valve cover for chafing, breaks, melted wires, or rodent damage.
Check the main injector harness connector at the valve cover gasket pass-through. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or oil intrusion, which can cause an open circuit.
Disconnect the harness and use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the terminals of the Bank 1 injectors. A healthy injector solenoid should have very low resistance (typically less than 1 ohm, but greater than 0). If the multimeter reads OL (Open Loop / infinite resistance), the injector solenoid has failed internally.
Check for continuity between the EDC harness connector pins and the injector connectors to rule out a broken wire in the main harness.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts or ECU damage.
Expose the Injectors
If the diagnostic tests point to a failed injector or internal under-cover harness, remove the engine valve cover.
Replace the Faulty Component
If the harness is broken: Replace the external injector wiring harness or the internal valve cover pigtail. If the injector is open: Remove the high-pressure fuel line and hold-down clamp for the affected Bank 1 injector. Extract the faulty injector and install the replacement.
Reassemble
Install a new valve cover gasket (highly recommended, as the pass-through connector is often integrated or sealed by it). Reinstall the valve cover and torque to OEM specifications.
Prime the Fuel System
Bleed the high-pressure fuel lines as necessary to remove air from the system.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the 3216 fault code. Start the engine and verify smooth operation.
