Case IH 3217 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Bank1 Warning - Unclassifiable Error
Issue description
This fault indicates an unclassifiable electrical error, open load, or short circuit on the injection cable/wiring harness for 'Bank 1' (typically cylinders 1, 2, and 3 on a 6-cylinder engine).
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Maxxum series
Check the cause
Inspect the Bank 1 injector wiring harness (routing from the EDC to the cylinder head) for chafing, melted insulation, or visible wire breaks.
Disconnect the harness at the EDC and the valve cover pass-through connector to check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.
Measure the resistance of the injector wire harness, the valve cover gasket pass-through, and the injectors using a multimeter (should be less than 1 ohm and greater than 0 ohms; ensure you zero your ohm meter before testing).
Test the Bank 1 injection cables for a short circuit low-side to ground or high-side to battery.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or further EDC damage.
Remove Components
Remove the valve cover to access the internal injector harness and the fuel injectors.
Replace the Harness
If the wiring harness tested out of specification, disconnect the internal harness from the injectors and replace it.
Replace the Injector
If internally shorted, remove the fuel inlet tube and the faulty injector. Ensure the copper sealing washer and rubber O-ring are in place on the new Bosch injector. Lubricate the O-ring with a light grease (like Vaseline). Slide the new injector into place, ensuring the fuel inlet tube hole in the injector aligns with the bore in the head. Listen for an audible 'snap' to confirm it is seated. Lubricate the O-ring on the fuel inlet tube, align the dimples, and snap it into the bore.
Torque Specifications
Torque the new injector bolts to 9 Nm. Torque the fuel tube nut to 50 Nm. Apply the final torque to the injector bolts by turning them an additional 75 degrees. Reconnect the injector harness and torque the nuts to 1.5 Nm.
Reassembly
Reinstall the valve cover, reconnect the external harness to the EDC, reconnect the battery, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes.
