Case IH 3220 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Bank2 - Application Dependent

Issue description

An electrical fault indicating an anomaly (such as a short circuit, short to ground, or open load) in the fuel injector circuit for Bank 2 (cylinders 4, 5, and 6), caused by a failure in the injector wiring harness or an internal short within one of the Bank 2 injector solenoids.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the Bank 2 injector wiring harness for chafing, melting, or exposed wires, paying close attention to areas routed near the cylinder head, valve cover, or hot exhaust components.

  2. Perform a voltage test (short to power) by disconnecting the engine injector harness from the ECU and testing for voltage from the connector pins to chassis ground with the key ON (there should be no voltage).

  3. Perform a continuity test (open circuit / short to ground) between the ECU connector and individual Bank 2 injector connectors to rule out a broken wire or a short to the engine block.

  4. Perform an injector solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the harness from the injectors on Bank 2 (cylinders 4, 5, and 6) and measuring the resistance across the two terminals of each fuel injector, comparing to OEM specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Harness

    Remove any engine covers, heat shields, or components obstructing access to the fuel injectors. (Note: On some FPT engines, the injector harness passes through or under the valve cover, requiring valve cover removal).

  3. Disconnect Components

    Unplug the main engine harness connector from the ECU and disconnect the individual pigtail connectors from the Bank 2 fuel injectors.

  4. Repair or Replace the Harness

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken conductor or severe chafing, either repair the damaged section using automotive-grade wire and heat shrink, or replace the entire injector wiring harness (highly recommended for reliability).

  5. Replace Faulty Injectors (If Applicable)

    If an injector failed the resistance test, remove the high-pressure fuel line, unbolt the injector hold-down clamp, and extract the faulty injector. Install the new injector using new O-rings and a new copper sealing washer. Torque the hold-down clamp and fuel lines to OEM specs.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the injector harness to the injectors and the ECU. Reinstall the valve cover (using a new gasket if it was removed) and any other covers.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EASy tool) to clear the 3220 fault code from the ECU memory.

  8. Test Run

    Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly without logging the code again.
