Case IH 3225 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) / Injection Processor: Bank2 Warning - Unclassifiable Error

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical fault in the fuel injector circuit for Bank 2 (typically cylinders 4, 5, and 6). The system knows there is a failure in the injector power stage or wiring, but it cannot definitively classify it as a specific short-to-ground, short-to-battery, or open-load circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum Series (215, 235, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380 Series 4)
  • Steiger Series
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Axial-Flow 7230
  • Axial-Flow 7240
  • Axial-Flow 8240

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness routing to the Bank 2 injectors for chafing, melted wires, or areas where the harness may be shorting against the engine block.

  2. Disconnect the Bank 2 injector connectors and the main EDC/ECU connectors. Check for loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the Bank 2 fuel injectors. Compare the readings against OEM specifications to identify an injector with an internally shorted or open solenoid coil.

  4. Connect the CNH EASy (Electronic Service Tool) to retrieve specific sub-codes (like FPT DTC 174) and run an automated injector cut-out or power stage test to pinpoint the exact cylinder or harness segment causing the fault.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shock or accidental engine cranking.

  2. Access the Injectors

Remove the engine valve cover (rocker cover) to gain access to the fuel injectors and the internal injector wiring harness.

  3. Isolate the Fault

Disconnect the internal wiring harness from the Bank 2 injectors. Test the continuity of the harness from the ECU to the injector terminals.

  4. Replace Harness (If Applicable)

If the harness shows infinite resistance (open) or continuity to ground (short), replace the engine wiring harness.

  5. Replace Injector(s)

If the harness tests good, the fault lies within the injector solenoid. Remove the faulty Bank 2 fuel injector(s) identified during the diagnostic ohm test. Install the new injector(s) and torque the hold-down bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the injector wiring harness. Clean the mating surfaces and install a new rocker cover gasket before reinstalling the valve cover.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH EASy tool to clear the 3225 fault code. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the code does not return under load.
