Case IH 3226 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): CAN timeout error from eVGT Actuator

Issue description

The control module has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) communication with the Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator. The system is reporting a timeout error because the CAN-Receive-Frame (SRA2EDC) from the eVGT actuator is disconnected, broken, or missing.

Check the cause

  1. Check the voltage supply to the eVGT actuator and verify that the dedicated fuse (often a 20A mini fuse, e.g., F-203) is not blown

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the eVGT actuator and the ECU for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or short circuits

  3. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the actuator connector for continuity, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to voltage

  4. Check if the actuator is physically overheated, which can increase internal resistance and cause communication dropouts

  5. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault is active and check for related codes (such as 3864 for internal electrical failure or 3861 for voltage failure)

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Inspect and Replace Fuses

    Locate the machine's fuse box and check the eVGT actuator fuse. Replace it if blown. If it blows again immediately, there is a short to ground in the harness or actuator.

  3. Harness Repair

    If diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or short in the CAN lines or power supply, repair the wiring harness. On some models, there is a specific eVGT adapter harness that can be replaced if damaged.

  4. Replace the Actuator

    If the wiring, power, and ground are all verified as good, the CAN controller inside the eVGT actuator has likely suffered an internal failure. Remove the defective eVGT actuator from the turbocharger assembly and install a new one. (Note: Depending on the specific FPT engine model, the actuator may require recalibration using the EST after installation, or the entire turbocharger assembly may need to be replaced if the actuator is not serviced separately).

  5. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and run the engine under load to ensure the code does not return and the turbocharger operates correctly.
