Case IH 3235 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Number of Injections Limited - by Charge Balance

Issue description

This code triggers when the number of fuel injections requested by the system is greater than the maximum allowed injections for the current battery voltage and engine speed. To prevent excessive electrical draw and maintain the system's charge balance, the engine controller artificially limits the number of injections.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Puma series

Check the cause

  1. Check the resting and running voltage of the battery

  2. Verify that the alternator is outputting the correct voltage to keep up with the electrical demands of the fuel injection system

  3. Check the current software version on the ECM using the Electronic Service Tool (EST)

Repair steps

  1. Test and Replace Battery

Perform a load test on the tractor's battery. If the battery voltage drops too low during operation, replace the battery.

  2. Clear and Verify

Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) using the EST diagnostic tool. Activate the ignition for one complete driving cycle (Ignition OFF, then ON, then start the engine) to see if the code returns.

  3. Re-flash the ECM

If the battery and charging system are healthy but the code persists, connect the EST and re-flash the Engine Control Module with the latest software calibration. The fault will often correct itself once the software recalculates the allowable injections for the engine speed.

  4. Replace the ECM

If re-flashing the software does not correct the fault and the electrical supply is verified to be perfect, the ECM has an internal hardware failure regarding voltage monitoring and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • 12V Heavy-Duty Tractor Battery

Generic fitment based on CCA requirements of the specific tractor model

  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC Unit

OEM part number varies heavily by engine serial number; must be ordered blank and programmed by a dealer to match the specific machine's dataset
