Case IH 3236 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Number of Injections Limited - by Quantity Balance

The engine's control system has detected a discrepancy in the fuel quantity balance. Specifically, the number of fuel injections being commanded is greater than the normal amount allowed for the current engine speed. The system detects a potential fuel leakage or pressure imbalance and automatically limits the number of injections to protect the engine from damage or over-fueling.

   Check low-pressure fuel system for inlet/return restrictions and ensure fuel supply pressure from the gear/lift pump is adequate (minimum 4.0 psi under load).

   Perform an air ingress test by installing a clear tube on the fuel supply line to observe if air is being drawn into the fuel system.

   Perform an injector leak-off test to check the fuel leakage rate from the electronically controlled injectors. Excessive return flow from a worn injector can cause a quantity balance error.

   Verify that the common rail pressure relief valve (PRV) has not popped open or is leaking fuel back to the tank prematurely.

   Service the Fuel Filters

   If the low-pressure diagnostics show a restriction, replace the primary (pre-filter) and secondary fuel filters. Clean the fuel tank breather and check Voss O-ring fittings for air leaks.

   Address Mechanical Leaks

   If the injector leak-off test or PRV test fails, replace the faulty injector(s) or the pressure relief valve.

   Software Re-flash

   If the mechanical fuel system is completely intact and operating within specification, connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and update the ECM to the latest software calibration.

   ECM Replacement

   If re-flashing the software does not correct the fault, the ECM has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
