Case IH 3236 (DTC F836) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Number of injections is limited by system / Number of Injections Limited - by Quantity Balance

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors the difference between the requested number of fuel injections and the current capability of the high-pressure fuel injection system to fulfill that requested number. If the difference between the number of requested injections and the actual injections reaches five injections, this fault is triggered. It essentially means the fuel system is unable to deliver the fuel quantity requested by the engine software.

   Verify the tractor's battery power supply. Check that the tractor battery has not been connected to an external power supply (such as a jump box or external charger while running).

   Review the High-Pressure Fuel Injection System Theory of Operations in the service manual, as the fault points directly to a fuel delivery limitation.

   Check for secondary fuel system fault codes that might indicate a failing fuel rail pressure sensor, fuel pump, or specific injector circuit.

   Disconnect external power supply

   If an external power supply is currently connected to the tractor, disconnect it immediately.

   Clear codes and test

   Clear the codes and test the system for normal operation to see if the fault was a voltage-induced anomaly.

   Perform balance and leak-off tests

   If the fault returns, perform a fuel quantity balance test and injector leak-off test using the electronic service tool (EST) to determine which component of the high-pressure fuel system is failing to meet the requested injection quantity.

   Inspect fuel pump and injectors

   Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors for excessive return flow or mechanical failure.

   Replace failing components

   Replace the failing high-pressure fuel system component(s) (injectors or injection pump) as identified by the balance/leak-off tests.
