Case IH 3236 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Number of Injections Limited (FPT) / Aftertreatment 1 SCR Outlet Temperature High (Cummins)

Fault code 3236 has two distinct definitions depending on the engine manufacturer. For FPT/CNH engines, it indicates the number of fuel injections is greater than normal. For Cummins engines, it indicates the SCR outlet temperature is reading higher than expected.

   Determine engine type (FPT/CNH vs. Cummins) to follow the correct diagnostic path

   For FPT/CNH engines (Injection Limit cause): Verify if the fault is currently active, as it may self-correct when injection quantity normalizes

   For Cummins engines (High SCR Temp cause): Check for other active aftertreatment fault codes (specifically 3142, 3143, or 3144)

   For Cummins engines (High SCR Temp cause): Check the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for contamination

   For Cummins engines (High SCR Temp cause): Check the fuel system for an injector misfire

   For Cummins engines (High SCR Temp cause): Inspect the turbocharger exhaust outlet for signs of engine oil or fuel contamination

   Check if an ECU/ECM calibration update is available for the machine

   Connect the electronic service tool and verify the fault is still active and present.

   For FPT/CNH engines.

   Try re-flashing the ECU software (update the calibration to the latest version).

   If the software update does not correct the fault, the ECU has failed internally and must be replaced.
