Case IH 3237 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Number of Injections Limited - by Software

Issue description

The engine control system is intentionally restricting the number of fuel injection events per combustion cycle due to a software-defined parameter, safety limit, or internal software state.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case Patriot 4440 Tier 4B
  • Case Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASy tool to pull all active and stored codes, looking specifically for internal ECM communication or memory errors (e.g., 3238 SPI Communication Error, 3239/3240 EEPROM Read/Write Failures).

  2. Verify if the engine dataset registered on the CANbus matches the machine.

  3. Check the current software revision on the ECM to see if a known bug exists that requires a factory patch or calibration update.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Clear and Retest

Document all codes, clear the inactive faults, and cycle the key to see if code 3237 returns as an active fault.

  3. Software Flash/Update

If the code is active and isolated (no EEPROM/hardware faults), flash the ECM with the latest OEM software calibration/dataset provided by CNH.

  4. Restore Parameters

If an update is performed, follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters.

  5. ECM Replacement

If the software update fails, or if the code is accompanied by EEPROM read/write failures (Codes 3239, 3240) or internal SPI errors (Code 3238), the internal memory of the ECM is corrupted or physically failing and the ECM must be replaced and programmed.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Varies entirely by specific machine model and engine serial number. Must be programmed by a dealer using the CNH EST tool with the correct engine dataset for the specific tractor/sprayer before the machine will start.
