Case IH 3238 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Replace Engine Controller (Internal Communication Chip Error) - CJ940
Issue description
Internal hardware defect or electrical disturbance inside the engine controller that has caused a failure in the SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) bus communication with the CJ940 processor.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Farmall
- skid steer
- Magnum Tractors 235 - 340 (Series 4)
- STX Steiger Tractors 350 to 600 HP models
- 580 Super N Backhoe Loaders
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
Check the cause
Cycle the machine's power to see if the code is an active, hard fault or a stored historical code caused by a temporary electrical disturbance.
Attempt to clear the code. If the fault code remains active and cannot be cleared, the internal CJ940 processor has failed, and the module itself is condemned.
Repair steps
Replace the Engine Controller
Disconnect the battery, remove the engine harnesses from the ECM, and physically replace the Engine Control Module.
Restore Parameters
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port to flash the new ECM (if it is a blank programmable unit) and restore the engine's self-learning parameters and injector calibrations.
