3239

Case IH 3239 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM EEPROM - Read Operation Failure

Issue description

The engine's computer is unable to successfully read data from its internal Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM). This is typically caused by electrical disturbances or an internal hardware defect within the ECU leading to an SPI bus communication error.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Magnum Tractors 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Steiger Tractors STX 350 - 600
  • Puma Tractors 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX
  • 580 Super N Backhoe Loaders
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Check Battery Voltage: Verify that the battery voltage is sufficient and stable. Excessive or low battery voltage can cause electrical disturbances that trigger internal communication errors.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Check the wiring harness and ground connections to the ECM for defects, shorts, or corrosion.

  3. Clear and Retest: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the code. If the error was caused by a temporary electrical disturbance, it may not return.

Repair steps

  1. Perform electrical and wiring checks

Perform the electrical and wiring checks mentioned above to rule out external voltage issues.

  2. Verify ECU failure

If the wiring is intact and the 3239 fault code remains present (or is accompanied by code 3240 - Write Operation Failure), the internal memory chip of the ECU has failed.

  3. Replace ECM

Replace the Engine Control Module (ECM).

  4. Program new module

Following replacement, connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) and follow the appropriate service tool procedure to program the new module and restore self-learning parameters.

Parts you might need

(6)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

    87403972
