Case IH 3242 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM (Locked) Recovery Occurred

The engine controller has been forced into a locked recovery state, typically caused by electronic disturbances, configuration problems, or internal hardware defects within the module itself.

   Check the machine for external electronic disturbances (e.g., poor grounds, voltage spikes, or battery issues) that could cause the ECM to crash and recover.

   Analyze what specific error triggered the recovery state by reading the HWEMon_numRecovery data label via the diagnostic tool and comparing the value with the corresponding OEM diagnostic table.

   Analyze and Clear

   After reading the HWEMon_numRecovery label to identify the trigger, clear the fault codes to see if the recovery error is a one-time anomaly or if it occurs repeatedly.

   Reprogram the ECU

   If the error occurs repeatedly, reprogram (reflash) the Engine Control Module with the latest software dataset to rule out a configuration or software corruption problem.

   Replace the ECU

   If the fault code 3242 remains present after the ECU has been successfully reprogrammed, the issue is a permanent internal hardware defect within the ECU. The Engine Control Module must be replaced.
