Case IH 3242 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM (Locked) Recovery Occurred

The engine controller has experienced a forced recovery or reset. This is typically caused by electronic disturbances (e.g., voltage spikes, drops, or wiring interference), internal hardware defects within the ECU itself, or configuration/software problems.

   Determine if the error is temporary: If the error exists only temporarily (i.e., normal fuel injection reoccurs and the machine operates fine), the error can often be ignored as a transient glitch.

   Analyze the trigger: Read out the specific label HWEMon_numRecovery using the electronic service tool (EST) and compare the value with the corresponding diagnostic table to see exactly what triggered the recovery.

   Check for electronic disturbances: Inspect the wiring harness, battery connections, and grounds for loose connections, corrosion, or shorts that could cause voltage irregularities to the ECM.

   Clear and Monitor

   Clear the code. If the error was a one-time anomaly, no further action is required.

   Reprogram the ECU

   If the error occurs repeatedly, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and reprogram/flash the ECU with the latest software.

   Replace the ECU

   If the failure remains present after reprogramming, the internal hardware of the ECU is defective and the module must be replaced.

   Restore Parameters

   If the EDC/ECU is replaced, you must follow the appropriate Service Tool procedure to restore the self-learning parameters and calibrate the new module to the machine.
