Case IH 3243 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECU internal: Visibility of Software Resets in DSM

Issue description

The engine's computer experienced an internal software glitch, processing error, or watchdog timeout, and forced a self-recovery (a software reset). Because it is suppressed or restrained, the ECU caught the error and reset the routine without causing a full engine shutdown.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case STX Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case Construction Equipment

Check the cause

  1. Check Power and Ground: Inspect the battery terminals, chassis grounds, and the main wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU. A momentary voltage drop or loose ground can cause the ECU to briefly lose power and trigger a software reset.

  2. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for related internal ECU codes (such as 3244 ECU Recovery Visible, 3245 ECM Processor Watchdog Not Plausible, or 3247/3248 Supply Voltage Too High/Low). If voltage codes are present, the issue is electrical, not the ECU itself.

  3. Check Software Version: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check if there is a newer software calibration available for the engine ECU, as OEM software updates frequently patch these internal watchdog glitches.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Connections

Disconnect the battery. Remove the harness connectors from the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or fretting. Clean with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect.

  2. Reflash the ECU

If the wiring is sound, use the CNH EST to flash the Engine ECU with the latest OEM software calibration.

  3. Clear and Test

Clear the fault code from the DSM (Diagnostic Status Manager). Run the machine under load to see if the code returns.

  4. Replace the ECU

If the code persists, causes operational issues (like engine derating or stalling), and the wiring has been completely ruled out, the Engine ECU has suffered an internal hardware/processor failure and must be replaced.
