Case IH 3244 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECU Recovery (Visible) - Recovery Occurred
Issue description
The engine's computer detected an internal hardware, software, or configuration problem during system startup or operation, triggering an internal recovery (a hard reset of the CPU).
Applies to these machines
7 machines- skid steer
- Magnum Series (235-340 Series 4)
- Steiger Series (350-600 HP)
- Axial-Flow series
- Wheel Loaders (e.g., 621E)
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
Check the cause
Inspect battery terminals, ECU ground straps, and main power supply harnesses for loose connections or corrosion that could cause temporary voltage drops or electrical interference.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and read the parameter 'HWEMon_numRecovery' to check how many times the recovery has occurred.
Clear the fault memory, cycle the key, and operate the machine to determine if the error was a temporary glitch.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Reprogram the ECU
Attempt to re-initialize and reprogram (re-flash) the ECU with the appropriate software data-set for the specific engine type. Note: You may need to contact CNH Technical Support (TSS) to obtain an authorization code for the ECU initialization download.
Verify Repair
After the flash is complete, check to see if the fault code has cleared.
Replace the ECU (If Reprogramming Fails)
If the error remains present after the reset, or if the software remains locked in the 'boot-block' (preventing the driving software from processing), the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure (such as a defective monitoring module or CPU).
Install New ECU
Remove the defective Engine ECU and install the replacement.
Restore Parameters
Use the EST to program the new ECU, load the correct dataset, and restore all self-learning parameters.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Module
Varies strictly by Engine Serial Number (ESN) and machine chassis. You must pull the exact part number from the CNH parts catalog using the machine's specific PIN/Serial Number.
