3245

Case IH 3245 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM Processor - Watchdog Not Plausible

Issue description

This is an internal hardware/software communication error within the engine's computer. The watchdog initiates a query/response communication with the CPU; if the CPU responds incorrectly, fails to respond, or has an impaired clock timing, the ECM flags the Watchdog Not Plausible error.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN
  • 695ST
  • 1150K
  • 1650L
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • B110B
  • B115

Check the cause

  1. Check for Active vs. Stored Status: Determine if the error exists only temporarily. If the engine still runs (injection reoccurs) and the code is inactive, it is considered a temporary glitch.

  2. Clear and Retest: Delete the fault from the memory and operate the machine. If the code does not return, the error can be safely ignored.

  3. Software Check: If the code returns, check if a software update or reflash is available for the ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Fault Memory

Connect your electronic service tool (EST) and clear the 3245 fault code.

  2. Cycle Power and Test

Turn the key off, wait for the ECM to power down completely, and restart the machine.

  3. Reload ECM Software

If the fault code returns immediately or the engine injections remain blocked (permanent error), use the service tool to reload/reflash the ECU software.

  4. Replace the ECM

If the error reoccurs after trying to reload the software, the internal CPU or watchdog module has permanently failed. The ECM must be replaced.

  5. Restore Parameters

If the ECM is replaced, you must follow the appropriate service tool procedure to program the new module and restore all self-learning parameters (such as injector trim codes and immobilizer sync).

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Varies strictly by machine model and Engine Serial Number (ESN). A replacement ECM will come blank or with base software and requires a dealer EST to flash the correct dataset and variant configuration.
