3245 (DTC E51D) - ECU

Case IH 3245 (DTC E51D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Query/response communication errors

Issue description

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) A-095 is monitoring communication between itself and the power stage controller over the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus. If no response or an erroneous response is detected, the A-095 will reset and attempt to monitor the connection again seven times. If the error is still detected after these attempts, the fault code is logged.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma Series Tractors: 130, 145, 160, 165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 210, 215, 225, 230, 240
  • Magnum Series Tractors: 180, 190, 210, 225, 235, 250, 280, 290, 310, 315, 340, 370, 380
  • Steiger & Quadtrac Series: 350, 400, 450, 470, 500, 540, 550, 580, 600, 620
  • Axial-Flow Combines: 240 Series, 7120, 7230, 8120, 8230, 9120, 9230

Check the cause

  1. Verify if an external power supply is connected improperly

  2. Check for a faulty charging system (alternator/voltage regulator issues)

  3. Inspect for a faulty solenoid on the circuit

  4. Inspect the wire harness for shorts, breaks, or poor pin connections at the ECU

  5. Check for a faulty Central Control Unit (CCU) or Universal Control Module (UCM) that may be disrupting network traffic

Repair steps

  1. Verify the Fault

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault is currently present and active.

  2. Inspect Power and Ground

Test the charging system and battery voltage. Ensure no external power supplies are causing voltage spikes.

  3. Harness Check

Disconnect the ECU A-095 connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture. Ohm-test the SPI bus communication lines between the ECU and the power stage controller.

  4. Software Reset

If the wiring and power supply are intact, use the EST to attempt a software reset/reinstallation on the A-095 ECU. During a software reset, dashboard lights may flash and gauges may temporarily drop to zero.

  5. Replace the ECU

If the ECU A-095 cannot be reinstalled, or if the internal SPI communication failure persists after a software flash, the ECU A-095 has suffered a hard internal failure and must be replaced.
