Case IH 3246 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Engine, Shutoff paths during initialisation - watchdog

An internal hardware or software failure within the engine's control unit where the watchdog detects that the shutoff paths (internal circuits responsible for safely shutting down the engine) are compromised or unresponsive during startup.

   Check for related voltage codes like 3247 (Supply Voltage Too High) or 3248 (Supply Voltage Too Low), which indicate external wiring or battery issues rather than an ECM failure.

   Clear the code and cycle the ignition key off and back on to see if the error was a transient initialization glitch.

   Test the main battery voltage and load-test the power and ground supply pins directly at the ECM harness to ensure stable voltage during startup.

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery negative terminal.

   Locate the Engine Control Module (ECM/EDC) on the side of the engine block.

   Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECM.

   Inspect the pins on both the ECM and the harness for moisture, corrosion, or bent terminals, which can cause voltage drops that mimic internal failures. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Reconnect the harness and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and attempt to clear the fault code.

   Cycle the ignition. If code 3246 returns immediately during the initialization phase and power/grounds have been verified, the ECM has suffered an unrecoverable internal failure.

   Replace the Engine Control Module.

   Flash the new ECM with the correct dataset/variant for your specific tractor or combine using the CNH EST software.
