Case IH 3247 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Shutoff paths during initialisation - supply voltage too high

Issue description

During the tractor's startup sequence, the control module performs an internal self-check (initialization). This code triggers when the internal monitoring for the engine's safety shutoff paths detects that the supply voltage is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold. This is primarily an internal hardware or software fault within the controller itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma 140
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Magnum 210
  • Magnum 230
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 255
  • Magnum 285
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Check the tractor's batteries and alternator output with a multimeter to ensure the machine isn't overcharging, which could cause a high supply voltage reading.

  2. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or an approved diagnostic scanner to clear the error code from the ECM's memory.

  3. Turn the key off, wait for the ECM to power down completely, and restart the machine to see if the code actively returns under normal conditions.

Repair steps

  1. Software Update

If the code returns after being cleared, connect the diagnostic tool and flash/download the latest correct level of software to the ECM.

  2. Retest

Cycle the key and retest the machine.

  3. Module Replacement

If the fault re-occurs after the software has been updated, the internal circuitry of the ECM has failed. Remove the defective Engine Controller and replace it with a new unit.

  4. Calibration

Program the new ECM with the machine's specific dataset/variant configuration using the CNH EST tool.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Varies heavily by exact machine model, emissions tier, and engine serial number. Must be ordered specifically for the tractor's VIN/Serial Number. Do not install a used ECM from a different tractor model without verifying compatibility.
