Case IH 3248 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Shutoff paths during initialisation - supply voltage too low

Issue description

During the key-on initialization and self-test sequence, the Engine Control Module detected that its primary supply voltage dropped below the minimum required operating threshold. This prevents the module from safely verifying its internal shutoff paths, which is a critical safety check before allowing the engine to run.

Check the cause

  1. Check the static battery voltage and monitor the voltage drop during the key-on initialization phase. Weak batteries can cause the voltage to dip below the ECU's threshold.

  2. Locate the permanent battery power supply fuse for the Engine Control Unit (typically a 30A fuse) and check for continuity or heavy corrosion.

  3. Test the Main EMS (Engine Management System) Relay / ECU power relay. A sticking or degraded relay can cause a severe voltage drop to the ECU.

  4. Inspect the engine wiring harness connecting to the ECU. Look for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion. Verify that the main chassis and engine ground straps are clean and tight.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Clean Grounds and Terminals

    Clean the battery terminals, cable clamps, and the main ground connections on the chassis and engine block. Re-tighten them to specification.

  3. Inspect and Replace Fuses/Relays

    Open the power distribution box. Locate the ECU power fuse and the Main EMS relay. If the fuse is blown or corroded, replace it. Swap the EMS relay with a known good relay of the same amperage to test. If the relay is degraded, replace it with a new OEM relay.

  4. Inspect the ECU Harness

    Disconnect the main engine wiring harness from the ECU. Inspect the pins on both the ECU side and the harness side for green corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  5. Verify Voltage

    Reconnect the harness and the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting the engine). Use a multimeter to back-probe the ECU power supply pins to verify they are receiving a full 12V+ during initialization.

  6. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool, clear fault code 3248, and cycle the ignition key off and back on to verify the code does not return.
