Case IH 3250 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Dataset - Variant Defect

There is a mismatch, corruption, or defect in the software dataset or configuration variant programmed into the control module. The module does not recognize the software configuration as valid for the machine it is installed in.

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port to confirm code 3250 is active.

   Ensure there are no active communication bus errors or ECU voltage supply issues (such as codes 3252 for SPI communication failure, or 3253/3254 for reference voltage issues) that could be causing data corruption.

   Check the current software version and dataset configuration on the Engine ECU to confirm the corruption.

   Connect Diagnostic Tool

   Connect the EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine.

   Reflash the ECU

   Navigate to the Engine Controller programming section and perform an "Update ECU software" procedure. You must flash the correct dataset/variant configuration specific to the machine's PIN/serial number.

   Cycle Power

   Once the software update is complete, clear the fault codes and cycle the ignition key.

   Verify Repair

   Check if the code returns. Note: If the software update fails, or if the code changes to 3251 ("Dataset - requested variant could not be set"), this indicates the Engine ECU has suffered a permanent hardware memory failure and must be replaced.
