3252 (DTC E61D) - ECU

Case IH 3252 (DTC E61D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) A-095: ECU internal failure - SPI communication error

Issue description

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) runs a self-test to verify the correct functioning of the fuel injection path shut-off procedure. During this test, each injection path is briefly activated during the ECU's initialization phase. If a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) communication error is detected internally within the module during this test, fault code 3252 is logged.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series: 130, 140, 145, 155, 160, 170, 185, 200, 215, 230
  • Case IH Magnum Series: 180 through 370 (including Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series: 350 through 600
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines: 240 Series, 7230, 8230, 9230
  • Case IH Wheel Loaders & Farmlift Telehandlers

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the fault is currently active. If inactive, it may be an intermittent voltage or communication glitch.

  2. Visually inspect the relevant harnesses and connectors leading to ECU A-095 for physical damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.

  3. Verify that the ECU connectors are fully seated and locked. Flex the involved wiring harnesses while monitoring the display to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts.

  4. Check the ECU A-095 to ensure it has the appropriate and most up-to-date software version installed.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If any damage, corrosion, or intermittent shorts were found during the harness flex test, repair the wiring or replace the affected connector pins.

  2. Re-flash the ECU

If the wiring is intact, connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and re-flash ECU A-095 with the appropriate software.

  3. Test Operation

Cycle the key and initialize the machine to see if the fault has been resolved. If the fault clears, return the machine to service.

  4. Replace the ECU

If the fault code 3252 remains active after a software re-flash, the ECU A-095 has suffered a hard internal hardware failure (SPI communication failure on the board) and must be replaced. A dealer must program/flash the new ECU to match the tractor's specific configuration.
