Case IH 3253 – Engine Controller: Replace Engine Controller (ADC Failure)

Issue description

ADC monitoring detects that the reference voltage is too low, indicating an internal failure within the controller's Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC).

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • Farmall
  • 580 Super N
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery and supply voltage to the ECM is within specification, checking for battery defects, alternator issues, or high resistance in wiring.

  2. Check the 5V reference circuits going to the engine sensors for a short-to-ground in the engine wiring harness or a shorted sensor.

  3. Disconnect sensors one by one to isolate the circuit; if the reference voltage returns to normal, the disconnected sensor or its wiring is shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or further module damage.

  2. Remove Engine Controller

Locate the Engine Controller (ECU) on the engine block or firewall, disconnect the main wiring harness connectors, and unbolt the module.

  3. Install replacement Engine Controller

Install the replacement Engine Controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  4. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  5. Restore self-learning parameters

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port. You MUST follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters, which includes programming the ECU with the machine's specific software, syncing the immobilizer, and inputting the injector trim codes.
