Case IH 3258 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller (EDC): High Side Power - Short circuit to Battery

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short circuit to a high source (battery voltage) on a high-side power driver circuit, specifically the Starter Relay Circuit.

   Relay Testing: Locate the starter relay. Remove it and test it with a multimeter for internal short circuits.

   Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running between the Engine ECU and the starter relay. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched areas where the relay control wire might be shorting directly to a 12V battery source.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the ECU and relay connectors. Check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power circuits.

   Voltage Drop/Continuity Test: With the relay removed and the ECU disconnected, test the high-side control wire for continuity to the battery positive terminal. If there is continuity, the wiring harness has a short.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Isolate the Fault

   Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the fault is inside the starter relay or in the wiring harness.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the harness is shorted to battery power, locate the damaged section of the wire. Cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire of the same gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing. Alternatively, replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Relay (If Applicable)

   If the starter relay is internally shorted, discard the old relay and install a new OEM replacement.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all connectors and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab diagnostic display to clear the inactive 3258 fault code.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine to verify the starter relay engages properly and ensure the fault code does not return.
