Case IH 3258 – ENGINE: Starter Relay Circuit - Short Circuit To Battery

The engine control module has detected a short to battery voltage (high source) on the high-side driver circuit that provides power to the starter relay.

   Inspect the starter relay for internal shorts or signs of overheating/melting.

   Use a multimeter to test the starter relay circuit (specifically the high-side power output from the ECU to the relay) for a short to battery voltage.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the starter relay for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the circuit to short to a 12V power source.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage during testing.

   Isolate the Short

   Disconnect the starter relay and the corresponding connector at the Engine ECU. Test the wiring harness for continuity to battery power.

   Repair Wiring

   If a short is found in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring.

   Replace the Relay

   If the wiring tests good but the relay itself is internally shorted to the high source, replace the starter relay.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the fault code. Verify that the code does not return upon attempting to crank the engine.
