3259

Case IH 3259 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECU Power stages: Starter relay HS power stage output short circuit to ground

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a short circuit to ground on the high-side power output circuit that controls the starter relay. This means the voltage supply line from the ECM to the starter relay is grounding out prematurely, which is typically caused by damaged wiring or an internal short within the starter relay itself.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Farmall
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Farmall 115U
  • Case 580 Super N (Construction)
  • Case IH Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Case IH Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring from the ECM to the starter relay. Look for broken, disconnected, chafed, or melted wires that could be shorting to the machine's chassis (ground)

  2. Disconnect the starter relay and use a multimeter to check the high-side power circuit for continuity to ground. If the short is still present with the relay unplugged, the wiring harness is the culprit

  3. Test the starter relay itself for an internal short circuit to ground

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery before servicing electrical components or the ECM.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short in the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wire. Ensure the new wiring is properly insulated and routed away from sharp edges or high-heat sources.

  3. Replace Relay

If the wiring tests fine but the relay has an internal short, remove the defective starter relay and install a new OEM replacement.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault code from the ECM using a diagnostic tool, and cycle the ignition to test the starting system. Verify that code 3259 does not return.
