Case IH 3260 – Engine Controller: Engine Controller Starter Relay Circuit Low Side Driver - Open Load
Issue description
The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controls the voltage to the starter control relay and actively monitors this low side control circuit for an open circuit condition. If the ECU detects an open circuit, which typically indicates a broken wire, a disconnected connector, or a defective relay, it logs fault code 3260.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- skid steer
- Steiger T4B
- Farmall
- Case IH Magnum 235 – 340 (Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) and Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- Case 580 Super N Backhoes
Check the cause
Check for broken, chafed, or disconnected wiring between the ECU and the starter relay.
Verify all connectors to the ECU and the starter relay are properly connected and undamaged. Ensure the connector locks are not broken and securely hold the connectors in a locked position.
Check the starter relay itself for internal open circuits or defects.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery before servicing electrical components.
Inspect wiring and connectors
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine Controller and the starter relay.
Check connector locks
If any connector locks are broken, replace the connectors, as loose connections will trigger an open load fault.
Repair wiring
If damaged wiring is found, repair the damaged section and retest the circuit.
Replace starter relay
If there is no damage to the wiring and the connectors are properly seated, the fault is likely a defective starter relay. Replace the relay.
Clear codes and retest
Turn the machine on and verify if the fault is no longer present or has become inactive.
Replace ECU
If the fault persists after replacing the relay and verifying the wiring integrity, the Engine Controller (EDC/ECU) may have an internal failure. If the EDC is replaced, you must follow the appropriate Electronic Service Tool (EST) procedure to restore self-learning parameters and reload the engine dataset.
